Welcome to rgidata.org

The Randolph Glacier Inventory has a new home. After years as a static page under glims.org/RGI, the RGI now has a dedicated website at rgidata.org — more focused, and better prepared to grow alongside the dataset and its community.

Why a new site?

The old glims.org page served its purpose as a landing page, but it lived inside the broader GLIMS infrastructure and was difficult to update independently. With the release of RGI 7.0 in September 2023, it became clear that the RGI deserved its own space — one the working group could maintain directly, and that could evolve as the project does.

The new site is built with MkDocs and the Material theme, hosted on GitHub Pages. The source is openly available at github.com/glims-rgi.

What's here

  • Home page — RGI overview, current version (7.0), citation, and data access link.
  • Version history — a concise record of all RGI releases from 1.0 to 7.0.
  • About — background on the dataset and the IACS Working Group.
  • Related Products — a community-maintained list of datasets derived from or extending the RGI. If you know of something that should be listed, open an issue.
  • User Guide — the full RGI 7.0 documentation, served directly at rgidata.org/user_guide/.
  • This blog — for announcements, version releases, and updates from the working group.

What happens to the old URL?

The old address (glims.org/RGI) will redirect permanently to rgidata.org. Any existing bookmarks or citations to the old URL will continue to resolve correctly.

We look forward to using this space to keep the community informed as the RGI continues to develop.
